While I heavily preach that we are responsible for our own lives, there is also a huge part of life that is out of our control. If you live in the Southeast you were undoubtedly affected by Hurricane Irma this past week and your life was likely put on hold. If you aren’t in the Southeast, I’m sure you can relate to something like this happening where you were on a roll and then life intervened.

Here are some quick strategies to help you cope:

Reconnect to your source of trust: Whether you are spiritual or religious or rely on yourself for strength, it’s in these times we need to strengthen that connection. For me, I believe in God. And in times like this, when things that are out of my control happen, I turn my trust to him. I talk to him all the time. If you subscribe to the bible, maybe there is a verse that you could find comfort in right now. If you are spiritual, maybe it’s a tarot card or chakra reading that you need. Whatever resonates with you the most right now is what you need to do.

Or maybe it’s just that you need to give yourself a major pep talk or get one from someone else to reconnect to your personal strength ( I’m happy to help) Where do you draw strength from and how can you reconnect to it right now?

Find value: I always say this. While I don’t believe everything happens for a reason, I do believe you can find value in anything. Ask yourself, What is good about this? During this hurricane, I have seen so much beauty in humanity as people have stepped up to help and serve each other so I see that as good. When things happen out of our control, it tends to give us a new perspective on things. What is this new perspective you hold ? How can you lock it in?

Plan for your comeback: Whatever, “this” is, it will pass. Things may be different, you may be different but make sure to reconnect and not give up on your goals. Even if you have to put something on the back burner for a minute or a week, don’t beat yourself up. Many things happen in life that are out of control and sometimes there is a level of surrender that we have to accept. What do you need to do right now to keep your goals alive?

For those of you affected by Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma, I want to offer whatever I can to help. Many of you are feeling like you got knocked off track, you feel lost and discombobulated with good reason. I know you are exhausted and that things are different right now. I’m offering anyone and everyone who is affected to get on the phone with me (no charge of course). What I can do is help you process what has just happened, get some grounding and help you to figure out ways to get motivated again.

And maybe it’s not you who needs this help right now, but you know someone who is in a headspace that could use this type of help right now. Please pass this message along.
